Effective tips on how to quit smoking

After taking the decision to quit smoking, there are a few steps that have to be taken to ensure the success of this endeavour. Here are a few tips to make the process easier.

Decide

First and foremost, you need to make a firm decision. You need to understand that this decision will be the foundation of your journey henceforth. Hence, a rock-steady stature has to be built and it has to be built by you. Once that is done, you will have to make a conscious effort to adhere to the said decision.

1

Make a plan

You have to make a very precise plan. You have to plan on what date you will quit and how will you lessen the number of cigarettes until then. You are supposed to keep on gradually lessen the number of cigarettes day by day. Ideally, you should set the date of quitting two weeks away from the time when you decide. That way, you have enough time to prepare yourself, but not enough to lose motivation.

2

Ditch your smoking paraphernalia

You need to get rid of all the things that might create the urge to smoke. In order to make the process of quitting smoking easier, you need to get away from all of the elements that surround smoking. Throw away any cigarettes that you have remaining along with your ash trays and lighters. If possible, avoid social settings that provoke you to smoke. Avoid alcohol and switch your coffee for de-caf.

3

Prepare for Junkie Thoughts

Thoughts of smoking will definitely arise and that has a very high possibility of throwing you off track. “One last cigarette won’t hurt”, “I will definitely quit tomorrow” are prime examples of Junkie thoughts. You have to have a rock solid stand against these thoughts. In order to take control of your life, you need to take charge on your mind first.

4

Relax

This is very important. You thought you were relaxing when you took smoke breaks and now that is going to be taken away (Although research shows smoking cigarettes increase anxiety. So you really weren’t relaxing.) Now you will need a stable and calm mind more than ever. You will be trying to break a habit that you’ve for multiple years, possibly. Your mind is going to try and fight against it. Adding that to the fact that there is a high amount of chemicals in durries that are addictive, you need to have all the calm and stability you can achieve.

5

Find replacements

Physical and emotional. Take up activities that keep you busy, entertained and happy. Whenever you get the urge to smoke, eat something or drink water. And one hack here is to whistle. Just whistle a song for 5-7 minutes and you will be surprised how much it helps.

6

Ask for help

Professional, if needed. If you do not wish to go for that, you can talk to anybody. A friend or relative you are comfortable with, perhaps. When you suppress thoughts, they cause distress. As you will be attempting to quit an addictive habit, it will be easier for you if you avoid stress as much as possible.

7

Remember why you wanted to quit

That will be your biggest motivation. Remember each and every point where you were just disappointed in yourself for inhaling lethargy, impotency and anxiety. Remember that one habit is destroying many important aspects of your life. And eventually your life. Make it a point to let your reasons be your motivation. That way, you will have the realization that you will be doing this for yourself and hence making the process easier for yourself.
