A lot of focus & concentration is required to build a successful life. In order to have a successful life having a successful career is of utmost importance. A stable career brings financial as well as a mental stability in one’s life. There are multiple social & psychological factors play an important role.

Few people fall prey to bad habits such as smoking at an early age due to the exposure to the outer world, the lifestyle changes or peer pressure. The casual smoking might then, at some point of time lead to tobacco addiction. According to the National Institutes of Health, the nicotine in cigarettes changes your brain, which leads to withdrawal symptoms when you try to quit.

Many people are aware that smoking affects the lungs & heart, however the effect of smoking on the brain is not really talked upon. Before discussing about how does smoking affects the brain, we shall understand the two important terms for the same.

Neurotransmitter: They are chemicals made by the nerve cell specifically to transmit the message from a nerve cell to target cell. Also called as chemical messengers. Receptor: They are structures, composed of protein, that receive and bind signals that may be integrated into biological systems to cause some form of cellular/tissue response, e.g. a change in the electrical activity of a cell. Neurotransmitter binds to the receptor which enables cell-to-cell communication in the nervous system.

Let us understand this in simple terms:

The brain requires signals to stay active, these signals are given by the “neurotransmitters”. The structure of the nicotine is similar to that of the neurotransmitter responsible for the signalling activity. When a person starts smoking frequently there is more nicotine, the brain associates nicotine as a neurotransmitter responsible for signalling.

As a result to compensate the signalling activity the brain reduces thenumber of receptors. This causes nicotine tolerance, so continued and more nicotine is needed causing addiction. Hence when a person doesn’t smoke the body doesn’t get nicotine & also as the receptors are reduced the brain doesn’t get the signals as earlier. Thus the person isn’t able to concentrate completely. These physical & psychologicalchanges affect the person’s social & personal life. This might lead to a compromised focus in one’s life & career.

Inorder to overcome these effects it is very important that one quits smoking. Quitting smoking will gradually help them to get their focus back to the important things in life.

There are many ways to quit smoking. NRT is the most recommended therapy by the World Health Organization(WHO). Nicotine Transdermal Patches are a form of NRT which can help you quit in 3 months. These nicotine transdermal patches have a very high compliance rate.
